" H.E. ambassador Bacha Debela delivered a statement on behalf of the Africa group at UNEA6"

Ethiopian Delegation led by H.E. Ambassador Bacha Debele Buta, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of FDR Ethiopia in Nairobi, Participated at the official opening of the Sixth Session of United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA6) on 26 February at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

H.E. Bacha Debele, addressed the gathering by representing African groups and underlined the importance of multilateral action to tackle the current environmental challenges. He also expressed that land degradation, climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, drought and desertification, are hindering African efforts to achieve sustainable development goals.

Furthermore, He called upon the international community to fulfil financial pledges, so as to enable African countries meet their commitments under various Multilateral Environmental Agreements.

Finally, He expressed the successful accomplishment of the 19th Africa Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN) which held in August 2023 under Ethiopia’s Presidency and implore the support of International Community to cooperate with Africa for the implementation of AMCEN decisions.

The theme for UNEA6 is "Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution".
