Ethiopia Calls for Urgent Action on Climate Change at G77 and China Leaders' Summit.

DUBAI, UAE - December 2, 2023 (MoPD)

In a powerful address to the G77 and China Leaders' Summit, H.E. Dr. Fitsum Asefa, Minister, Ministry of Planning and Development, called for urgent action to address the climate crisis and its disproportionate impact on developing countries.

Dr. Fitsum Asefa highlighted the devastating effect of climate change on Ethiopia, which is facing record-level droughts and extreme flooding. She emphasized the need for wealthy nations to significantly increase their climate finance provision and investments in the low-carbon, climate-resilient transition in developing countries.

"The climate crisis is a global emergency, and it requires a global response," said Dr. Fitsum. "We must act now to prevent catastrophic climate impacts, and which means wealthy nations must step up and provide the resources we need to adapt and build resilience."

Dr. Fitsum also called for the reform of the global financial architecture to ensure that developing countries have access to the financing they need to address climate change. She pointed to the Africa Group's UN resolution for a global convention to transform the global tax system as an example necessary action.

"We must work towards a profound change in how we sustainably finance the future," said the Minister. "As a group, we must stand together and make our collective voices heard."

The G77 and China Leaders' Summit is the first of its kind to be held at a COP climate conference. It is an opportunity for developing countries to come together and discuss their shared challenges and priorities on climate change.
