An agreement was signed at Addis Ababa University on the updated declaration of partnership between the governments of Norway and Ethiopia on climate change and environmental issues.

Two countries mainly reducing greenhouse gas emission from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable management of forest and enhancement of forest carbon stock  (REDD+) and promoting sustainable development through protecting the country’s natural environment and promote climate resilience within the context  of Ethiopia’s nationally determined contributions, climate resilience green economy strategy, and long term low emission development strategy are the matters on which the agreement was signed.

In the signing ceremony Minister of State for Planning and Development H.E Dr Seyum Mekonnen, H.E Mr. Ahmed Shidie, Minister of Finance, H.E Dr. Girma Amente, Minister of Agriculture, President of Addis Ababa University H.E Dr. Samuel Kfle, Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, H.E. Mr Andreas Eriksen, invited ambassadors and representatives of UNDP were present.

The president of Addis Ababa University, H.E Dr. Samuel Kfle, said that this agreement will be signed in the premises of Addis Ababa University, making it historic.

H.E Minister of Agriculture Dr. Girma Amente explained that today's agreement has a great opportunity to achieve sustainable development goals and the agreement shows that Ethiopia's commitment to fight against climate change.

The H.E Minister of Finance Ahmed Shidie, who signed the partnership agreement, said in his speech that the partnership between Ethiopia and Norway has existed since early times and the agreement will be a great inspiration for countries like Ethiopia, especially for a country that is affected by floods and droughts due to climate change the agreement will help to reduce the problem.

H.E Mr Ahmed Shidie also mentioned that before this, gender equality, migration and other issues were work in partnership with the Norwegian government. He added that climate change and poverty reduction are the priority issues of the Ethiopian government and In this case the agreement reached today between the governments of Ethiopia and Norway will strengthen the friendship between the two countries.

Norwegian Climate and Environment Minister H.E. Mr Andreas Eriksen, who signed the agreement on behalf of the Norwegian government, said that it is an agreement that opens up a good opportunity to reduce climate change at the international level and in Ethiopia.

He mentioned that the Norwegian government prioritizes food and water security and will continue its partnership and support by providing the necessary resources according to the agreement.

The Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, H.E. Mr Andreas Eriksen, finally, said that For the result Ethiopia is achieving on a green legacy, green economy, strategy of climate change resistance and low carbon emission the agreement will help and we are happy to sign the agreement that will continue the achievement and the results that are being recorded in the county.

After the signing of the agreement, H.E Dr. Girma Amente, Minister of Agriculture, H.E. Mr Andreas Eriksen, Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment; Ambassadors and invited guests conducted a seedling planting program.

In the partnership agreement, Norway has provided support of 75 million dollars for the work Ethiopia is doing in forestry.
